75 Years

President's Message

2024 is a very significant year for the Club, as it marks our 75th Anniversary. Many of you will have noticed this year's special Logo, shown to the left.

We have several special events planned during the year, including Diggers' Day, a Sporting Lunch, 75th Commemoration Gala, "The Long Lunch" and Christmas. Each of these will offer a unique setting and entertainment, and I hope you support our celebrations.

Our Finances are strong, and I am pleased to say that we remain cash positive. Your Board continues to invest significantly in both the Course and Clubhouse with the 14th Green, Paths and Kids Playroom the latest of many improvements.

Membership continues to be highly sought-after, with only a handful of spaces available in the new Membership Year and a healthy waitlist.

Many of you will be aware of the current problems with the 18th Green due to the warm, humid summer and a drainage problem. I ask that you support Luke, our Superintendent,  and his team as they continue to work very hard to bring it back to a playable condition. When playing, please make an extra effort to keep carts and buggies off worn areas and away from greens, repair divots and pitch marks and generally look after our Course. If you are interested in Volunteering, please let Luke know.

Wishing you all a wonderful Autumn of Golf, and I look forward to sharing your Fairway soon!

Mark Mathieson
President

Course Upgrades

The 14th upgrade is progressing very well with the pathways being laid last Saturday, 2 March and the turf rolled out on Tuesday.  The last two bunkers are now being built and they should be finished soon, ready for the Klingstone application and then sand.  Superintendent Luke has been busy preparing the green surface and will be sowing the green next week.

Path Upgrade is also progressing with the first stage from the first tee complete and already able to be walked on. The second stage In front of the Half Way Bar is currently being formed, with concrete pour possibly over the weekend. The third stage is from the end of the practice putting green to the end of the 10th tee and around the back of the 18th green. The existing path will be removed in the coming weeks and formed up to be poured the following week. Again, please follow the directions of staff and observe the roped off areas for your safety and we thank everyone for their patience while we make these upgrades.

Course Renovations Monday, 11 and Tuesday, 12 March - Reminder, the course is closed Monday and Tuesday next week, however the Sports Bar upstairs will be open as usual from 11am.

Major Pennants 2024

The team have really battled it out this year both at home and away having played two matches against both Muirfield and Bonnie Doon and one against Long Reef.  They have represented the Club proudly and promoted the sponsors, Tyrepower, Palmers Glass and West Ryde Smash Repairs.

Last weekend at Long Reef we again came down to the wire and it was Joseph Lin who played all the way through to the 18th securing a tightly fought draw, an impressive result given playing away, accompanied by many distractions of passers-by, plus the spectacular scenery.

We are in preparation for the last match of our section this weekend, and as we came away with a draw last weekend, we have no doubt that Long Reef will throw everything at us to keep them from finishing closer to the bottom of the section.

Keeping in mind that we need to win four of the seven matches, please come along and support the lads on Sunday as they hit off at 7am in perfect weather conditions.  We had a great crowd at the last home game, even making the papers, so come along and see how great our team are!

Gear Cup

The Gear Cup final was played last Saturday, 2 March, hitting off at 8am. Frazer Campbell and Josh Xavier got off to a good start, leading by 1 and 2 up at different stages through the front nine and then 3 up with 4 to play at the serious end.

Then Denis Briggs and Donald Stowe kicked into gear and fought back, making it all square by the 18th. Josh held a critical clutch putt on the 19th to keep them going and by the 21st Frazer 2 putted to win the match.

Congratulations to all, a well fought match.

Put Your Hand Up

Volunteering on the golf course can be a rewarding experience for those who are passionate about golf, and is a great way to contribute to your Golf Club.

Our volunteers meet at 10am on Tuesdays and Thursdays up at the course maintenance facility.

We would like to thank them for all the work they have done far, completing numerous jobs around the golf course: from divoting tees/fairways, removing large sticks/branches from tree lines and cleaning up along our fence lines.

This week two of our volunteers Rob Herborn and Stan Skala helped with the new pathway from the first Tee - Great Job Guys, especially on what was a very warm day.

We would love to welcome more Members who enjoy and find satisfaction in getting out on the course in a slightly different way, to join our current volunteers. If you can spare some time and like working outside in the fresh air, we would love to welcome you.  After their work on the greens our Volunteers are rewarded not only with our thanks but with a complimentary refreshing drink in the Clubhouse. Please put your hand up and drop a line to the Super via email super@northrydegolfclub.com.au.

Women Veterans' Update

Apologies, I made an error in the last report, to join the VWGA is $22 not $17, hard to keep ahead of the price rises!

This year we have decided to give out 10 balls on every stroke, par, and stableford rounds as well as the usual 10 on a medal round.  The next medal round is on Tuesday 5th March and we will give out an extra 10 balls to make up for the washed out Tuesday.

Veterans' fees are due, as of the beginning of this month Friday, 1 March.  Put your $25 in an envelope, with your NAME and place in the Veterans Box on the Bench in the locker room.  Any member wishing to join the Veterans please fill in application form, found at the back of our folder on the bench.  The VWGA joining fee of $22 is paid only once, their yearly fee is paid by the Veterans Committee out of your $25.

For any further information, speak to Cheryl Ward, Adele Sloane, Carmel Hughes or myself.
