Hello all from a very wet and soggy golf course. In the last two weeks the course has received 138mm of rain. Last week we reluctantly made the hard decision to close the course, which while we checked every day, was unfortunately necessary for several days. These decisions are made to ensure player safety as well as protecting the golf course from damage.
In the cooler months of the year, any damage which occurs on the course will take many months to recover. This is due to the cold soil temperatures which cause the turf grass to go into dormancy. With the plants/grasses entering dormancy, they do not have the active recovery as in the warmer months. Thus, to assist in recovery we ask you to please take a sand bucket with you on your round of golf and help fill in any divots. A divot filled will repair in half the time it would if it was left unfilled with sand.
Over the last month we have completed various course improvements which include turfing out bare patches in fairways and roughs.
Our targeted herbicide application program is in full swing. Through this program you will see certain grasses dying off in parts of fairways, tees and surrounds. The grasses we are targeting are kikuyu and winter grass in couch grass surfaces. This will be an ongoing practice to help eliminate unwanted grasses, with the aim to maintain a clean weed-free surface.
The 14th green is progressing well with its establishment phase. Staff are now cutting all the work zone area. The new green has held up well in all this rain and I can confirm all the drainage is doing a brilliant job.
Garden works are in full swing this time of year with all maintenance being carried out, including hedging, weeding and mulching of areas.
